FROM BRITAIN TO THE CARIBBEAN AND BACK

It’s a journey oscillating between the Caribbean and Britain, swayed by a symphony orchestra, rocked by world percussions, and vibrating to the sound of soul-stirring voices. These original compositions, featuring 3 singers and 2 world percussionists, merge traditional orchestral music with Caribbean influences from composer Serge Sainte Rose’s native Martinique and across the wider region.

This vibrant musical odyssey is both a bridge between different cultures and a reflection of Sainte Rose’s personal story, from growing up in the West Indies to living in Europe.

From Britain To The Caribbean And Back was premiered at St John’s Smith Square, one of London’s premiere classical music venues, on the 7th October 2022.

From Britain To The Caribean seeks to immerse the audience in the full story of the slave trade in the Caribbean: The first half is centered around the Atlantic slave trade, the life of the slaves, their pains, struggles, despair, hopes, escapes, fights, and ends with the abolition of slavery. The 2nd half is post abolition, more modern and positive.
The concert is an hommage to the Caribbean people, and the orginal music merges various rhythms from the region, from gwoka and bele to kompa, reggae, salsa, biguine etc, with classical influences.
